GR11 Sendero Pirenaico

Sendero Pirenaico, GR11 (Es). 840 km, . Through the Spanish Pyrenees, from the Atlantic to the Mediterranean.

The GR11 mirrors the GR10. The GR10 runs through the French Pyrenees, the GR11 is on the Spanish side.

The Pyrenees mountains are beautiful. Origin, culture, geology and climate differ significantly from the Alps. The Spanish side of the Pyrenees differs substantially from the French side. True, there is more rain, but then the Spanish side is less affected by the Atlantic.

The GR11 is supposed to be a little harder than the GR10. This has something to do with the terrain one walks through: the trails are more rough, the boulders larger and more frequent. As on the French side, you will have to deal with serious altitude differences.

The variation when crossing from west tot east (or vice versa) is large. The Basque way of life in the West is totally different from the Catalan customs.

The route is well marked and documented. Anyone with a good condition and some knowledge of hiking in the mountains will be able to start and finish the GR11. In peak season it is advisable to book the cabins in advance.
