Beara Peninsula

Beara Way, Glengarriff - Glengarriff, 206 km, 9 days

Whereas the Kerry Way is very popular, the Beara Way is less often chosen by walkers. Why? Of course, nearby Iveragh Peninsula with Killarney and its lakes is much better known by tourists.

The Beara Way is situated on the Beara peninsula, a narrow elongated stretch of land south of the touristic Iveragh peninsula. The interior is mountainous, with green valleys, a rugged coastline with some fine beaches, and no tree plantations. The outer limits of the peninsula stretch far into the Atlantic. Ultimately, the trail also calls upon the far end, Dursey Head, on Dursey Island. When walking on the hilly ridge, the ocean is all around you.

The path is a little sportive. It is well designed, with cooperation of all landowners (thank you all!). Accommodation is available in the little villages.

The European Long Distance trail E8 makes use of the Beara Way, from Dursey Head to the town of Kenmare, where it meets the Kerry Way.

Another very interesting long distance trail, the Irish Coast to Coast Walk, chooses instead to start in the town of Cahirciveen along the Kerry Way in the Iveragh peninsula, but apart from the start, both long distance trails share the same itinerary.

And finally the third long distance trail to mention here, the Beara - Breifne Way, still under construction (2013): the Beara Way is the first stage of this 500 km long trail across the Irish heartland.

  • Positivo The never ending colours of the Irish west coast , the Caha and the Slieve Miskish mountains. You can admire as well the views at Bantry-bay, Kenmare-river, as the Atlantic Ocean. ”The views can be breath-taking.” The loughs in the mountains, the colours of some villages (Eyeries), sheep, the gasp, the rugged coast in the far west……...

  • Positivo I have walked extensively in the South West of Ireland and the Beara peninsula is for me the best area to explore. It is a very rugged and hilly peninsula and very under-populated. The views are amazing, to the south are views of Sheeps Head and Mizen, to the West is Dursey and the Atlantic, to the North the mountains of Iveragh and Kenmare bay
  • Negativo Like all walks in Ireland it can be very muddy underfoot. Walking posts can be mis-leading and hardto find so always come with an up to date OD map. Tics and midges are a nuisance in summer definately bring insect repellant. Prepare for rain!

  • This is a very scenic part of the walk but beware of one or two things. The area East of the valley towards Kenmare gets very boggy and is hard going. The Gleninchaquin valley itself is really stunning, just be aware that a farmer / farmers in t...
