Sudan

South of Egypt, the river Nile meandering through from south to north and bordering on the Red Sea in the east, lies the large desert country of Sudan. Only in the south the landscape is more humid with swamps and some tropical rain forest. Here you will find Sudan's highest mountain Kinyeti (3187 m).

Although most of the country is rather flat, there are a few more mountain ranges, such as the Jebel Kassala range in the east, the Jebel Marra volcanic range in the west, and the Nuba mountains in Kordofan region southwest of Khartoum, which must all be wonderful for trekking, but appear to be off limits at the moment due to political instability and violence.
